Luke Charters MP wins flooding victory for York Outer retirement community

RESIDENTS at a retirement complex in York are celebrating after claiming victory in a long-standing battle over flooding.

About 50 residents from the retirement community at Hartrigg Oaks in New Earswick met with York Outer  MP Luke Charters on Friday (February 14) after Yorkshire Water supplied a new pump to control the water level in the nearby Westfield Beck.  This follows a campaign by residents supported by pressure from the York Outer MP.

Mr Charters said: “In 2021 Yorkshire Water took the pump away, but ever since it’s created worry every time there’s been a large amount of rain and until recently we were getting nowhere with them.

“I raised the issue in parliament and met with Nicola Shaw head of Yorkshire Water and we have finally got there.”

Barbara Boyce, a former Lord Mayor of York and one time city councillor, now herself a Hartrigg Oaks resident thanked Mr Charters for taking up the issue.

“I’m so grateful we don’t have an MP who sits on his bum, all day doing nothing,” she said.
